Starting point for Ikon project

Writer: lpillalpilla

Now as odd as this looks, bare with me.

As I started talking to my partner about themselves and learning more about them, I learnt the basics, their name, the fact that they love football (season ticket holder) they also expressed a big interest in men's mental health.

This interest in men's mental health is something I wanted to explore.

The image above is, one way I have expressed my initial thoughts on the topic.

I wanted to create something that was impactful so that whoever saw the image would not forget what they had seen. For this effect, I wanted to create something creepy so it says in one's memory.

As I looked into a way to try and depict mental health in a creepy manner, I came across Yamikawaii which refer to the "sick cute" which is an aesthetic which tries to show the inner emotional wound one might have because of mental health. Accessories in this style are inspired by medical instruments like syringes, bandages, pills and fake blood. This subculture is from Japan. A country where the suicide rates are incredibly high.

The idea of using plasters to represent that someone in emotional distress is an idea I wanted to work with, as I thought plasters could be interesting to work with. Using a hello kitty plaster to create this feeling of cute and femininity, to contrast the idea, that pink is not a colour for boys. While also trying to show how society tells men/boys, not to cry or not to show emotions as women should be the ones to show emotions.

Plasters go over a wound to cover it up.

I could cover my subject and have things written on the plaster to show how society tells men/boys to be, intern also creating an environment where it can be hard for men to open up about emotions and mental health.
