D E V E L O P M E N T / O U T C O M E S

Writer: lpillalpilla

I went into illustrator and experimented with fonts. I was looking for a font that was bold and that looked like it could be a font from the Elizabethan era.

I came across Iowan ols style. I thought this type was perfect as the serifs give it a serious feel to it.

I began to play with the text by changing the colour and outlining the font.

I overlayed the font outline with the font fill. This gave me a 3D effect and a feeling of question.

I wanted to use primary sources in my work so went into photoshop and created a a painting. Juliet.

The positioning of her face was crucial as people identify faces. I didn't want her face froward, as I thought that makes too much of a strong statement.

I wanted Juliet to be off centre a bit and expressing an emotion of something embracing her.

I also experimented and came up with this mock up.

The veins represent Juliets inner struggle of her emotions and conflict.

The red for Love and being a Capulet.

Blue for Montage.

These are both causing her pain.

Illustration to animation.

I had all my illustration on one layer on lots of artboards. When i brought that file into After effects, it did not show my illustrations, only the one on my first artboard. I had to save each illustration onto separate files and import them that way.

(Link to outcomes at the bottom of this blog, or just go to artwork/Romeo & Juliet)

My animation outcome has all the information about, Shakespeare Re:loaded.

It carries my theme of love and death.

To depict Blossoming, I drew stages of a Rose blooming.

Small outcome I created.

The colours red and blue embracing her is a representation of the two houses causing her conflict.

I experimented with text and its placement.

where I ended up placing the word "Juilet" is questionable. I think my idea while placing the word was interesting, because of the overlaying and colour change. However I do not think it works overall, as the word gets lost in the midst of all the other type.

I felt as if I was using typography to send my message across and i wanted to try and use more visual language.

How to depict death?

Memento mori (remember death) artwork contains a lot of skulls and skeletons.

Incorporating a skull to represent death.

I scanned in a drawing of skulls I drew, and Image traced it on illustrator.

I played around the placement of the skull drawings.

I found it difficult to add type to this outcome as the background is dark and not too forgiving.

My insight was, Love and death, two opposites and key themes in the play.

I created an insight : love blossoms death.

Ive created outcomes that does send my message across but could be improved, such as the outcome with the Juliet that you cant exactly make out.
