JUDO (Our journey to find an insight)

This is what judo looks like :

From Steves feedback.

I went online and visually looked at how Judo looks like.

I found that the most intriguing images, to me were the ones, where the judo moves were captured right at the moment where they are flooring their opponent.

That specific moment showcases the power and speed used in a split second.

Who wouldn't want to be able to do that ?

A visual language.

Judo is not brutal, its about putting your opponent on their back.

It's about contact, grabbing someone. Knowing how to.

Even if you're small you can take someone on.

Initial Ideas.

ONE
8-bit  instruction App

8-bit art style app

Idea * instructions in like 8-but art style , to go with the instruction manual

Today we will learn how to do this move: 'Unki-osh

The little character does the actions and wins (sound tatda)

-how to :

The little character shows you how to do the move  (breaks it down ) and illustrate its or it moves like a gif

(Different character design on the belts )

TWO
Manga
Our first idea is a book that teaches readers about judo, the book will include judo discipline, moves and etc. The book will be in a manga/instruction book format The book will be aimed at teenagers and people in their 20s... With the insight being that mental discipline is a key factor of judo... And by making the product into a manga/book you remove the user from their phones, the biggest distraction young people have around them allowing them to better focus on what they learn while also being visually pleasing and its also implements more Japanese culture for the user to explore If you get what I mean (Manga/book) The tone of voice is light hearted

THREE
 Mindspace App
This app is meant to help put the user into the mental state needed for a Judo practitioner. Help them grow into someone ready to  Being in the right state of mind can be as important as your physical prowess when it comes to judo as the sport is a peaceful and highly disciplined activity

This mood-board was the basis for the idea of creating an instruction manual on judo moves in the format of manga.

Strength comes from within - being strong willed can be the difference

Strong mind strong fighter

Multiple people of different ages, gender, size

Pick your fighter

Manga visual language- Manga.

When we ran this idea with Steve and Xavi and they liked the format but were hesitent on having it be a instruction manual.

"Dont lecture me" - Xavi

No one likes being told what to do.

We should create a desire to engage people to go and do Judo.

Healthy Mind healthy body.

Judo 'mindspace' is an app that was inspired by the Headspace app which is an app.

predominantly promoted towards students through their partnership with Spotify but is available for everyone. The app helps people stress less, focus more and sleep better.

So me and Larry looked at the idea of using a stress reliever to promote the calmness and balance Judo offers.

Using that to help them meditate in the hopes of bettering their mental health and then hopefully that would initiate them to better their physical health.

Judo at home.

being able to do a repetition of a move to gain the knowledge of how to react in a moment.

To take some time out of your day.

Everyone knows when you are okay with your health and your body is active, your mind is better. A balance.

Our target?

People who need to take time to go out and do some mindfull self care.

Using Photoshop to create a mock up of what you could practice at home.

Some moves.

Javi Feedback:

(notes)

"Advertising is like a duck"

You need to know a little bit of everything, so you know it exists. work on a topic and then dive deep.

An insight.

commonly accepted social truths : (something that will connect with our target)

in a way that they will go, 'yeah it's true'.

Using your opponent weight against them - this is an insight that already appeals to the people who do Judo but not to the people who don't play Judo.

'Judo is for the Japanese' and then you show it is not true. Making that connection and then showing that it is not that.

"It is a very good exploration of possibilities, however I think you have been dragged too much into the art direction, before having a strong insight, and a strong concept. "

Female Judo is also big in Spain.

Power doesn't come from size- showing that through Judo

David and Goliath - Visual language

It about Technique.

It can make you feel very powerful without going to the gym.

"Explored"

A lot of things such as different art directions.

You can win, beat someone bigger than you through technique. (Thats interesting)

Manga is fashionable now. It is emerge in this western culture.

The art style can be manga

'Im not a big fan of instruction " - you need to first engage your audience.

Books and tv shows influence people.

For example Jurassic park or games of thrones.

Get people into dinosaurs, naming children after characters.

We learn through watching.

This kinda things have influences people

Create a desire. To get people involved.

"Dont lecture me"

Do something amazing and then show me.

//

Javi showed me a cooking anime he watched growing up, telling me, he wanted to be a chef because of this anime.

When you watch anime, about sports, it makes you want to try it out too because you get the insight of the characters and what they go through.

The manga that is realistic compared fantasy.

They have to find an insight and an emotional connection to the audience.

To be able to highlight what makes something good, but what makes the thing amazing?

Notice the background and the red circle changes.

Developing the initial idea.

I played around with the text, as that is the main focus.

JUDO - if you can instantly see that and create the connection :D

The red and white resembles japans flag.

Using a mix of photoshop and illustrator to create and develop some of our work.

I used references to draw out some characters for the manga we were going to promote.

Animation

We used the layers of our artwork to create an animation.

Our Manga

We sketched out some initial sketches for how the manga could look like.

I then just digitalised them on photoshop.
