(Adolphe Mouron Cassandre, 1931)

Cassandre was an artist that worked out of the art deco movement in the 1920’s the poster to the left show's this.

This image narrowed down has two rectangles, which show two perspectives of the subject, the boat. The shift of both perspectives is so smooth, at first glance you think it is one image. A.M Cassandre's use of gradients and geometric shape, is seen here through the use of muted colours, and the way he has created another frame/image within another, playing with scale. Here you can see his influence by surrealism and cubism.

For me personally, Cassandre showed me you can create works of art that are also commercially viable, this is not just my observation however, in the art world, Cassandre was known for bridging the gap between fine art and commercial works of art, most, if not all art communities who study Cassandre's artwork, acknowledge Cassandre as a master of utilising airbrushing techniques in order to create seamless art pieces.

Finding a fine line between the two is something I want to find for myself. As I love both art and graphics, i know both are not the same.

A.M cassandre also created Yves Saint Laurent's iconic logo in 1961[2]

He vertically arranged Yves Saint Laurent's initials to create a timeless logo. The letters flow between one another, creating a smooth and elegant design.📷📷📷

Aside from being a painter and a designer, he also experimented with typography, leading him to create fonts such as Bifur in 1929, Acier Noir in 1935 and Peugeot in 1937. (Bradley, Laura, 2012)

The technique of airbrushing allowed him to create seamless artwork, which even to this day, have a timeless feel due to the impact his work create, either by colour, geometric shapes, size or gradients. The way he has been able to create posters from a unique perspective, allows us to try visualise objects in a different manner to try and create an impact through a visual language so that a customer can remember the poster.
